JUSTIN FRIELLO ~ MARMALADE VIDEO

Justin’s fond childhood memories of Marmalade lead to the creation of the song featured in this video. He performed the piece in 2021 at THE LINDA, WAMC's Performing Arts Center, Albany, NY.

"Marmalade, the Cat is a retelling of stories found in Cindy Wheeler's picture books for children featuring the eponymous cat, Marmalade. I am a cat person through and through. But as the universe would have it, I am deathly allergic to them. Singing this is about as close as I can come to a cat without having an asthma attack. There are few other songs in my catalogue that fill me with such joy.”

THE SCAREDY CATS & THE HAUNTED HOUSE

Cindy received a wonderful commission request from a man who had grown up with a book she illustrated for Random House in 1982. The story is a sweet and simple Halloween tale about two cats who wander into a spooky old house and get scared away by a surprise inhabitant. It is now long out of print, but still very much alive for Matthew Winslow.

“It's one of the very first books I have any memories of my mother reading to me, and it holds a special sentimental place in my life, as its images are some of the most formative experiences I've had with visual arts. I distinctly remember poring over the pages of the story again and again, and feeling as if I looked hard enough, I would be able to see what was in the grass just beyond the tattered white picket fence, or maybe even be able to peer into the windows of the old house and see something there. That's how real the world you created felt to me. When Mystery walks into the spiderweb, I remember getting so tickled by the expressions you captured that I would fall over giggling just like Midnight does.”
